House Stark

House Stark is one of the Great Houses of Westeros. They reign over the biggest kingdom of Westeros, the North, and their seat is located in Winterfell. The sigil of House Stark is a grey direwolf on a white background over a green blazon and their words are ‘Winter is Coming.’

 

The members of House Stark at the beginning of the show were:

• Lord Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark. He was the Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North. King Robert Baratheon named him Hand of the King during his reign and, before he died, Lord Regent of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm before for Joffrey I. However his duty towards the realm did not last long, as King Joffrey Baratheon had him executed at the end of Season 1 under a false charge of treason, because Ned refused to swear his allegiance to Joffrey. Ned was sure that Joffrey was not the rightful heir to the throne, as he was not son of Robert but of Cersei and her brother Jaime Lannister.

• Lady Catelyn Stark. She was Ned’s wife. She belonged to House Tully. She was murdered by a member of House Frey at the Red Wedding, at the end of Season 3.

• Robb Stark. He was the oldest song of the Stark family. In the War of the Five Kings, he was the King in the North but he lost when he was betrayed and murdered by Roose Bolton under the orders of House Lannister at the Red Wedding as well.

• Sansa Stark. She is the oldest daughter of the Stark family. She was supposed to marry Joffrey Baratheon, but after her father was accused for treason and Margaery Tyrell asked for Joffrey’s hand, Sansa was married to Tyrion Lannister. However, after Joffrey’s murder, she escaped King’s Landing helped by Little Finger, who had her married to Ramsay Bolton. He abused her until she managed to escape Winterfell with the help of Theon Greyjoy and Lady Brienne of Tarth. In Season 6, she helped Jon Snow won the Battle of the Bastards and recover Winterfell. She had Ramsay Bolton killed by his hounds and she is currently the Lady of Winterfell.

• Arya Stark. She is the youngest daughter of the family. After her father was murdered, she escaped King’s Landing disguised as a boy. She served for a while Tywin Lannister in order to know his plans against her brother Robb during the war. She escaped helped by Jacquen H’ghar, and joined the Brotherhood without Banners until they tried sold her friend Gendry to the Red Woman. Then, she traveled with the Hound towards the Vale to be reunited with her aunt, the only family they thought she had left. However, after they learned her aunt had died, she decided to go to Braavos to meet Jacquen and try to become no one and serve the Many-Faced God. In the end she decided to return to Westeros and murder Queen Cersei, but when she learnt some of her siblings were still alive, she returned to Winterfell.

• Brandon Stark. He is the second son of the family. He was left a cripple after Jaime Lannister pushed him out of the window of a tower in Winterfell in Season 1. When Theon Greyjoy invaded Winterfell in Season 2, he escaped with his brother Rickon, Hodor and Osha towards the Wall to meet Jon Snow. However he learnt that he was to become the new Three Eye Raven and with their help and Jojen and Meera Reed’s help, they went beyond the Wall to meet the current Three Eyed Raven. When he died, Bran became the new one and in the end managed to go back to Winterfell with the help of Meera and meet his sisters there.

• Rickon Stark. He was the youngest son of the family. He escaped with Bran and, in their way towards the Wall, he did not go further and stayed with Osha. They were later captured by Ramsay Bolton, who finally shot him dead with an arrow right before the Battle of the Bastards.

• Jon Snow. He was the illegitimate son of Ned Stark. He joined the Night’s Watch in Season 1. After some time there, he went on an expedition beyond the Wall, where he ended up becoming part of the Wildlings. However, it was all plan to manage to stay alive, but when he went back to Castle Black, he had realized that the Wildling were not enemies, as the real enemy was the Night King. He became Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch but he was stabbed to death in a mutiny after he tried to sign peace with the Wildlings so that they could help each other. The Red Woman resurrected him and with the help of the Wildlings and other Houses of the North, he fought Ramsay Bolton and his army. In the end he won with the help of Sansa and the Houses of the Vale, and was named King in the North. He pledged allegiance to Daenerys Targaryen in return for her help to fight the Night King. What Jon did not know is that he is the true heir to the Throne, as he is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark (Ned’s sister).
